Holder Bluestone Tiles

Bluestone is also commonly known as basalt. Basalt is an igneous rock which is mainly made up of feldspar. It’s usually grey to black in colour and fine grained, which is due to the rapid cooling of lava. The surface of bluestone tiles and pavers have small holes on them and this is caused naturally as a result of gases escaping during the cooling process – it is one of the beautiful features that sets bluestone apart.

Bluestone is commonly used on internal flooring as well landscaping applications. One of its greatest features is the amazing slip and scratch resistance.

Common Bluestone Restorations

There are a range of different problems that can arise when working with a natural stone such as bluestone. It is a stunning stone when cared for but can be rather unappealing when stained or when peeling, grout damage and deterioration has occurred.

Removal of Efflorescence from Bluestone Tiles

Efflorescence is the white, chalky residue that often occurs in outdoor paving, usually in the grout. The problem usually arises when salts come in contact with the tile from an outside source usually ground water. This is most evident in porous tiles like Bluestone where the efflorescence can seep through with ease. Other than being unattractive, the problems really arise when the efflorescence cracks the sealer on the tile.

Holder Tile Repairs will sometimes need to use a harsher product to remove such staining, as the natural “bloom” needs to be killed off so it doesn't return. This problem is due to either excess moisture from above or below the tile. To avoid efflorescence ensure there is sufficient drainage in the area and it is thoroughly cleaned, particularly outdoors.

Removing efflorescence can be challenging. Our products are superior to those you will find at the supermarket and will not only remove the stains but ensure they don't return.

Treating Stains on Bluestone Tiles

If your bluestone has never been sealed or you weren't quite quick enough wiping up a stain, you might be left with an uneven, unpleasant looking floor. Most stains can be removed or their appearance lessoned. Obviously the quicker we can get to a stain the more chance we have of saving your bluestone.

The removal of the stain will depend on:

  • What has caused it
  • How long it has been on the surface
  • If the Bluestone has been sealed previously
  • If it is indoor or outdoor

The natural colours and textures of bluestone is what give it that unique beauty. Residue, waxes, and other impurities obscure the natural stone and a professional clean with conditioning products and world class sealers will remover these and add beneficial minerals back to the stone. The waste and water is extracted as we go so the area is not left wet.
